Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has been sanctioned by UEFA for his deliberate red card against Ajax in the round of 16 Champions League clash.
The disciplinary body of UEFA meted a two-match ban for the Real Madrid defender for deliberately getting into the referee’s book in the Real Madrid 2-1 win over Ajax in the Champions League.
Ramos wanted to get into other rounds of the tournament without a card as he intentionally picked a yellow, in theory, he would have missed the second leg but been able to play without worrying in the quarter-final.
His punishment has now been made official by UEFA’s Disciplinary Committee after proceedings were opened earlier this week.
“Ramos will be suspended for two games for picking up a yellow card on purpose,” was UEFA’s explanation. The implication of the punishment is that he would miss the return leg against Ajax and if Real Madrid advanced to the next stage he would also miss the first leg of the quarterfinals.
